Forming Future Generations of Catholics
The Faith Formation of our youth is so very important. It gives them the firm foundation of faith on which to build a life of morality in a world which would otherwise tempt them to deny and leave behind. The times in which we live beg for prayer, fasting, and sacrifice from holy men and women of all ages, including our youth. To continue to pass on the rich tradition of the Catholic faith, handed down from Christ Jesus Himself, we must start at the very beginning of life with infant baptism and then make certain that we enroll our children into faith formation programs so that they complete the sacraments of initiation and continue on the path of eternal salvation.
Family Responsibilities
When it comes to faith formation, the parents of the children are the number one teachers and examples of the faith. Parents should model for their children what it means to be a holy, Christian person. They should do this by their words and their actions. The future faith life of the children will, in the vast majority, be directly correlated to that of the parents. In other words, the children will most likely have a strong faith foundation and make it a life priority if the parents are willing to do the same and are good examples for the children.
Parish Obligations
The obligation of the church parish when it comes to faith formation is to be a constant and steadfast help to the parents of the children. We take on the faith in a structured capacity and employ an organized curriculum to teach the children about the precepts of the Catholic faith from the Catechism. It is not the parish's responsibility to completely form the faith life of the child, but rather to enhance and expand the faith life they should already be experiencing and forming in the home.
